We're nearing the end of 2022, but there are still a few restaurants due to open before the year closes. Here are the ones to keep an eye on.
Ikoyi
Strand - 180 Strand, Temple, London WC2R 1EA
Not so much opening as relocating, two Michelin-starred Ikoyi have upgraded their home from the compact spot on St James Market to here on the Strand, in the same building as Soho House and Toklas. Here they'll not only have a terrace for the warmer months, but a very useful private dining room space. It's "the next step in the restaurant’s evolution" they say.
Shiro
City of London - 100 Liverpool Street, Broadgate Circle, London EC2M 2RH
For an area with so many well-paid high flyers, Broadgate isn't exactly blessed with great sushi spots, making the arrival of Shiro from the Aqua group worthy of note. Fresh from success in Hong Kong this Japanese restaurant is best known for its crystal sushi (sushi rolls draped with colourful jelly layers). The lunchtime bento boxes will probably do a roaring trade too.
Mayha
Marylebone - 43 Chiltern Street, London W1U 6LS
Lebanese restaurant group Nothing But Love are behind this upcoming Marylebone sushi place on Chiltern Street, focusing on an omakase menu. The chefs are ex-Yashin and Mayha Beirut and we like the sound of the 'hidden' courtyard bar serving up Japanese cocktails alongside items from the raw bar.
Stereo
Covent Garden - The Piazza, London, WC2E 8BE
Looking for somewhere to go in London where a post-work drink might evolve into a full-blown Out Out night with dinner and dancing? Well, that's what the Experimental Group are hoping they're delivering with Stereo, their new late-night haunt. The food is from Andrew Clarke (Acme Fire Cult) and cocktails are, as you might imagine from the owners of the Experimental Cocktail Club bars, going to be great.
Tozi Grand Cafe
Battersea - 3a Electric Boulevard, London SW11 8BJ
If you want an early look at the art'hotel opening at the Battersea Power Station before Joia throws open its doors next year, head to the ground floor restaurant from Tozi. Think European Grand Cafe vibes with an all-day menu that focuses on pasta and features some amazing negronis.
Chet's
Shepherd's Bush - 65 Shepherd's Bush Green, London W12 8QE
Having previewed this at a pop-up in central London earlier this year, LA-based chef Kris Yenbamroong is opening in earnest at hip new West London opening The Hoxton, Shepherd's Bush. When we visited the Americana-inspired popup we loved their spicy snacks and the idea of a breakfast menu with a pandan cinnabon might drag us out there for a morning visit.
Also opening in December
- Morty & Bob's (Kensal Green) - Bringing cheese toasties and lots more.
- Cavo (Soho) - A new Mediterranean rooftop restaurant.
- Edo Izakaya (Old Street) - From the people behind Soho's Robata.
- Penelope's (Covent Garden) - A fusion of Spanish and Israeli cooking.
