Jason Atherton closed Pollen Street Social in July, but he's quickly replacing it with Marys and it's a big change from the fine dining the restaurant is known for.
It'll be essentially divided into three parts, with a light refit inside (to start with). Where the original bar was, there will be a version of his Blind Pig bar (previously seen at Social Eating House). Heading into the restaurant, what was the 10-seater chef's counter will now be a burger bar - serving just one smash burger. That's for walk-ins only but you can wait for a space to come free in the bar.
And then there's the main restaurant, which will mainly be a grill-focused affair. So there are plenty of steaks and chops as the main event, with other dishes including:
- Duck croquette, pickled cucumber, satay sauce
- Veal sweetbread, shiitake kebab, gremolata sauce
- Cornish Gurnard ceviche, kaffir lime, prawn head emulsion
- Ibérico pork chop, cuttlefish, chorizo, cocoa bean
And that's not all that's planned. Apparrently, from January to April next year, the site will completely close for a full revamp. Then the burger bar will move downstairs to a speakeasy-style space called "Meat and Two Veg" which adds a plant burger to the menu. We're going to assume that the other veg will be chips.
It's all part of a major new push for Atherton's brand in London, which sees him opening four new restaurants (Sael, Three Darlings and Row on 5 in addition to Mary's) and one hot dog counter this year. He's a very busy man.
