If you’ve been looking for somewhere new to dine while waiting for a delayed train at King’s Cross, then the answer is here: RAILS. It’s the relaunch of former Plum + Spilt Milk, the restaurant within the Great Northern Hotel.
Frequent Eurostar travellers will be aware that the Great Northern Hotel opened in the final stages of the King’s Cross regeneration project in 2013. Now, as part of the redesign of Rails restaurant, which seats 80, there’s now Little Bar (formerly known as The Snug), which specialises in French cocktails. There’s a mix of old and new world wines on the list (50% of them French), as well as craft beers, ales and soft drinks.
On the food menu, you can expect all-day dining, ranging from traditional breakfasts to a dedicated grill section for hearty evening meals with a choice of sauces and sides. The overall theme is modern British classics with a hint of French influence to prep you for your departure (or indeed lament your return from les vacances), including:
- Baked St Marcelin with truffle and honey
- Roasted beetroot with tahini yoghurt, pomegranate and lamb lettuce
- Cornish cod with buttered leek, apple and thyme dressing
- Moules frites
- Steaks (such as flat iron, rib-eye) and chateaubriand sharing plates
We’re also excited about desserts (île flottante, tarte tatin, chocolate fondant), and could potentially blame our late boarding on the cheese trolley, given it offers both British and French options from La Fromagerie. And if you do miss your train, it could be due to your Morning Routine (Grey Goose vodka, Grand Mariner and Pampelle). RAILS is launching afternoon tea and brunch later in the year, so there’s another good excuse to visit.
