We're clearly entering awards season. On the same night as the AA announced its 2022 Hospitality Awards, the UK's East and South East Asian restaurants were being celebrated across town at The Golden Chopsticks Awards.
Hosted by Gok Wan, the Mayfair awards ceremony sounds like a blast, with even a live performance from Blue who were there to hand out a prize.
London restaurants put up a great showing, picking up many of the evening's awards as follows:
- Best Fine Dining - Hakkasan
- Best Newcomer - Fan Hup in Woolwich
- Best Golden Cocktail - Opium
- Best Street Food - Inamo Sukoshi in Market Hall Oxford Street
- Best Dining Experience - Park Chinois
- Best Sweet Treat - Cuppacha
- Best Fusion - JM Oriental in Colindale
- Best Classic Restaurant - Phoenix Palace
- Best Chef - Andrew Wong from A Wong
Wong's award turned out to be bitter sweet for the chef who revealed that it was on that day 18 years ago his father had died, an event which prompted him and his wife Natalie to take over the family business. "This award really is for all our forefathers ," he said, "who went through the toughest of times to give us today a today where we can even have The Golden Chopsticks Awards."
Finally, the Food Influence Award went to Uncle Roger, Nigel Ng, who's singlehandedly taken chefs and food writers to task for sins against egg-fried rice and woks.
