Kleinsky's brings NY-style bagels to Mayfair (via Cape Town)

Bagels are very much a thing at the moment, as evidenced by the huge popularity of (and queues at) It's Bagels (who are about to open their second location, in Notting Hill).

It turns out that another big bagel shop has opened in Mayfair to relatively little fanfare, but is becoming something of a sleeper hit. Kleinsky's is styled after a New York-style deli, but actually has its roots in South Africa. They opened in Cape Town a decade ago before expanding to a second store and finally deciding to come overseas to London.

It's taken over what was The Grosvenor cafe (next to North Audley Canteen and Bibi); it's a small NY-style deli with the bagels as its main draw. On offer are seven types of bagel - plain, poppy seed, sesame, onion, pretzel, pumpernickel and the "everything". With those you can have all manner of fillings from the standard smoked salmon and cream cheese or a classic Reuben to more intricate options like:

  • Breakfast banger - smashed beef or pork patty, fried egg, red Leicester, chipotle ketchup
  • Schnitzel - panko crumbed chicken schnitzel, asian slaw, kewpie mayo, tonkotsu sauce
  • Lamb BLT - Lamb bacon, lettuce, tomato and mayo

Plus you can, of course, come up with your own creations.

Alongside the main event you'll also find pastries, including cinnamon buns and chocolate pistachio swirls. Having opened just under a month ago, the buzz is already building for Kleinsky's and we wouldn't be surprised if they decide to open a second bagel shop in the city down the line. The Cape Town versions have a much larger menu (albeit in larger spaces), so we will have to wait to see if they have plans for something bigger soon.
