Kolamba East sees the Sri Lankan restaurant head to the City

Kolamba East sees the Sri Lankan restaurant head to the City

21/7/24 - Updated with the opening date

After finding success with their first Sri Lankan restaurant in Soho, Kolamba founders Eroshan and Aushi Meewella are going east for their second opening.

It's opening as part of the Norton Folgate development just off Bishopsgate, which is pretty much right on the edge of Spitalfields, Shoreditch and The City. As for the food, this new Kolamba will also have a completely new menu. That's going to be based around the dishes that the founders remember from their childhood as well as being inspired by recipes handed down through generations among family and friends.

That translates pretty well on the menu, with dishes that include:

  • Mas Paan - a bun filled with slow-cooked black pork curry, served with pineapple jam
  • Moor King Prawn String Hopper Biryani - Made with alternating layers of steamed noodles and a rich king prawn curry
  • Jaffna Lamb Shank in a rich and spicy tamarind sauce
  • Red mullet in a creamy coconut curry with notes of tamarind and chilli
  • Roasted Pineapple Fry - pineapple is sautéed with cardamom and mustard seeds

Things finish up with payasam for dessert, a Sri Lankan rice pudding that's flavoured with cinnamon and raisins.

As for the restaurant itself, it's a bit bigger than the Soho original with room for two private dining rooms as well as a separate bar space. That bar will have cocktails that also use Sri Lankan spirits and ingredients, so you'll get creations like Colombo Sour made with Colombo Gin and a cashew orgeat.
