This year, the world's top chefs and restaurateurs gathered in Valencia to hear where their establishments had placed in the 2023 World's 50 Best Restaurants list. "It's a celebration of diverse cuisines and culinary cultures," said the list's head of content, William Drew in his opening speech.
The event began with a recounting of the 51-100 portion of the list, which you can see in full here, before going on to the top 50 with just a slight break mid-way for a fairly odd interpretive dance.
Last year the UK had just two restaurants in the top 50 so the addition of one more restaurant is a significant leap for us as a city. It was a pretty great year for The Clove Club, despite slipping down a few places to 38 they were still very much towards the top of the list. And we bet there were Champagne corks popping at Ikoyi which leapt right up the list from 49 to 35.
But the biggest congratulations this year have to go to Kol which jumped into the top portion of the list, being the UK's highest entry at 23 (up from 73 last year). "We're truly blown away to be included alongside so many fantastic restaurants across the world," said the team on Instagram.
Of course, there has to be a winner, and this year that went to Central in Lima which took the number one spot. If you're not thinking of making a trip to Peru anytime soon, the good news is that chef Virgilio Martínez Véliz also owns a restaurant here in London, called Lima. So if you're looking for a taste of what Vigilio does, that's surely worth a visit.
