Last year Sonora Taqueria beat their crowdfunding target and got on with getting their first taqueria off the ground - and now it's time to officially open.
Sonora has been touted as serving up some of London's best tacos, ever since their days in Netil Market. After that closed they popped up at Arcade Food Hall in the meantime, and even fought off legal action that would have prevented them using the word "taqueria", but opening their own taqueria was always the goal. For that, they've taken over the space in Stoke Newington that used to be Massala, an Indian takeaway.
As for the menu, it'll be both familiar to people who have tried them at Netil but there'll be plenty of new dishes too. Things will start at breakfast with scrambled egg breakfast burritos (with refried beans or machaca) and fried egg and cheese tacos (with chorizo or veggie chorizo).
For the rest of the day it's mainly about the grilled or guisados (stewed) tacos. Those include carna asada, caramelo and campechano in the former, barbacoa and chorizo in the latter. And alongside those will be quesadillas, bean tacos and the option for their great cheese crusts. Prices are notably good too, with tacos in the range of £3.50 - £5.
So if you've yet to try the legendary Sonora tacos - now's the time. They're opening for breakfast and lunch only to start with - but expect those hours to expand later on.
