Flat Iron X Winemakers Club in The City combines steak with magnums of wine

A Hot Dinners exclusive

What: Flat Iron X The Winemakers Club

In a nutshell: Wine + steak in The City

Summing it all up: The next restaurant from steak masters Flat Iron is something of a departure. They'll be concentrating on bavette steak - and pairing that with a huge range of wines by the magnum.

The low-down

Flat Iron have been busy over the past few years successfully expanding across town. But in doing so, they've also been trying a few new things along the way. First up, they opened at Arcade Food Theatre where they were able to test new dishes. Next for them is a new team-up with Winemakers Club near Aldgate (taking over the space that was very briefly Barullo). This time it's all about bavette and wine.

The new venue will concentrate on bavette steaks solely - with just a set menu of bavette, dripping chips and jugs of béarnaise on the menu (all that for £18). Beef is sourced by "Head of Beef" Fred Smith from predominantly Angus cattle from the west coast and Ayrshire, and they're taking care to age and finish it well.

There is a dessert too - that's going to be a Cru Virunga chocolate mousse, made with ethically-sourced chocolate from the Congo and topped with dark Amarena cherries.

But while the steak menu stays the same - the wine list will be much larger, ever-changing and evolving. On top of the main list, there will be daily specials of three reds available by the glass (from £8) and carafe and a selection of 50+ magnums if you're really going for it (and the magnums will be available to take home too) starting from £40.

Here's what Flat Iron's Charlie Carroll has to say:

We’re very excited to team up with John and his team at The Winemakers - their mission to source great wines without being swayed by trend and to make them accessible is exactly what we try to do with our beef. This will be a fun opportunity for us to do something different, throw open the doors to one and all as we uncork some magnums, grill one of our favourite cuts, and get into the true spirit of simple hospitality.

Winemakers Club's John Baum adds:

Charlie approached me about teaming up with Flat Iron, it was almost too good to be true. It’s a great opportunity for people to share large-format wines over dinner at such affordability - they have the potential to try anything.
