Gosnells, which is London’s only meadery - and can we pause just for a moment even to to consider how great it is that we have a meadery at all in 2019? - is about to bring its drinks direct to drinkers with the launch of its first bar. The honey-focused set up can be found in an upstairs room above Coal Rooms in Peckham from 8 March and will be of course offering lots of mead, plus small plates from the Coal Rooms kitchen downstairs.
Gosnells' two signature meads will be the star of the drinks list, with the Original coming in at 5.5% and the vintage coming in at a punchier 12%. There’s also going to be a regularly-changing roster of experimental flavours including pink hibiscus, salted, hopped, barrel-aged, gooseberry and – in keeping with the times – a booze free version. You can go for just one or opt for a tasting flight if you’re interested to compare the different flavours..
Mead will be used in cocktails being served here too and the whole thing will be accompanied by small plates from Coal Rooms, including Peckham Fatboy potatoes with beef fat mayo; Cobble Lane kabano sausage; smoked pigs’ head-blood pudding with apple ketchup; and bone marrow & marmite bread and butter pudding.
Founder Tom Gosnell will also be hosting regular mead masterclasses, mead-paired supper clubs, and talks on how mead is made – from bee to bottle if you will. If you’re interested to learn more and try some fine meads, it all sounds like a great way to get up to speed.
