What: Brasserie of Light at Selfridges
In a nutshell: Caprice does Selfridges
Summing it all up: The latest big new restaurant to open at Selfridges is the Brasserie of Light - their team-up with Caprice - the people behind The Ivy restaurants, Sexy Fish and lots more. And like Sexy Fish, this has a big old Damen Hirst installation front and centre.
The low-down
You've got to hand it to Richard Caring - he does like to go big. Barely a month after the planned opening of Harry's Bar on James Street, he'll be opening another huge new brasserie one street over in Selfridges.
The Brasserie of Light, which will be next to the store's first-floor menswear department, will have its own entrance on Duke Street which means it'll be Selfridges' first restaurant that can open outside store trading hours (without having to be ushered through the store by security). And - because well why the hell not - it'll feature a huge 24-foot high crystal Pegasus by Damien Hirst coming out of the restaurant wall.
Food-wise there's nothing to scare the usual Caprice Holdings crowd - we're promised proper brasserie fare "with a mix of British and internationally-inspired dishes plus a very unusual champagne afternoon tea". Running the kitchen will be the former Head Chef from Balthazar, Emanuel Machado who'll be serving up spaghetti with lobster as a main course, Pegasus Pie with a yuzu coconut cloud for dessert and a weekend brunch dish of avocado and poached eggs, with ancient grains, turmeric, coconut and garlic hollandaise.
Top restaurant designer Martin Brudnizki has consulted on the space (he also designed Sexy Fish) which features a central bar and private dining room and will fit in 146 diners.
