winebarThe wine bar with more than a hundred wines by the glass, plus more than a thousand bottles available from the wine and spirits department.

What do we need to know about the Dining Hall?

As you'll probably know, we've been taking a keen interest in the multi-million-pound overhaul of Harrods' world-famous food halls. And it's been quite an exercise so far. First, we had the jaw-dropping roastery and bake hall where you can order sourdoughs with your initials on them. Then there was the wine department with its live feeds from vineyards and Aroma Table guide to grape varieties. Following that was the Fresh Market Hall which became, in an instant, one of London's top traiteurs offering everything from truffled mac and cheese to Asian slow cooked beef rib to take home.

Now it's the turn of the new Dining Hall to be unveiled and we were there on opening day for a grand tour of what it had to offer. It's quite dazzling.

Where is it?

You'll find it on the ground floor of Harrods. The nearest tube is Knightsbridge - take the Brompton Road/Harrods exit.

Where should we sit?

All of the restaurant sections have counter seating, if you enjoy watching chefs at work. But there is also table seating available.

So what's there?

The centrepiece is the Wine Bar with food by Caviar House & Prunier. Around that you'll find The Sushi bar by Eddie Lim of the Mango Tree group, Vineet Bhatia's Kama by Vineet, a Pasta Bar, Fish Bar and The Grill.

Here's what we had:

tatakiWagyu tataki from The Sushi Bar with red onion salsa, jalapeno dressing and garlic chips (£28)

sashimiQuite the most spectacular sashimi bowl we've ever seen - just look at that ice action going on. The standout was some amazing otoro but frankly, everything on here has ruined us for other sashimi now. (£75 for 15 pieces).

oystersRock oysters with ponzu and chilli dressing - just the way we like them, nice and teeny. (£12 for three).

steakA tasting of some of the steak being served up by the grill - on the left, British beef aged for a minimum of 38 days in a Himalayan salt room and, on the right, the most divine, melt-in-the-mouth Chilean wagyu.

kulfiOnly Kama by Vineet serves desserts, so we tried this Malai kulfi with saffron falooda and rose syrup (£10).

dessert..and this almost too beautiful to eat dessert with coffee 'lego' ice-cream bricks, chocolate samosa (or chocomosa), bebinca and kapi kulfi (£12).

What's on offer for vegetarians?

There's plenty available at Vineet Bhatia's section Kama by Vineet including Achari paneer tikka and Aloo baingan sharing bowls. Then there's the pasta bar of course - here's what we had from there.

burrataSuper fresh burrata made that day from La Latteria right here in London, in Acton - served up with San Marzano tomatoes (£9).

pastaSilky artichoke pasta in a brown butter and sage butter sauce (£18)

Overall thoughts:

There are food halls and then there is the Harrods Food Hall. Where else in the world could you sit eating fresh burrata, made mere miles away, under a 1920s Grade II* listed tiled roof with an £850 glass (no, not a bottle) of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti to keep you happy?

The space, which has been redesigned by David Collins Studios is drop-dead gorgeous of course and there's plenty of luxe foodstuffs to be enjoyed here, but there's also been real love and a sense of place devoted to the menu creation here. It's a glittering showcase of what Britain's food scene is today.

How to book: They're encouraging visitors to book in advance. Right now that's either by phone (numbers for the counters are here) but they'll be bringing that online in due course. Alternatively each end of the hall has a booking counter you can swing by to put your name down.
