With the closures of both DH Evans and Debenhams on Oxford Street, at least one of the department stores left is planning to be in there for the long haul. John Lewis just announced a big makeover, and as part of that they've brought in Jamie Oliver.
The chef, who hasn't opened anything new in London since his Catherine Street restaurant last year, is launching a new cookery school and cafe inside the store. We're not sure exactly which space it's going to take up, but it's apparently over 4600 square feet (which sounds like a pretty big space - but our square footage understanding is pretty low). Apparently, that will fit in two classrooms (which will also host free children's classes in the holidays) as well as a 50-seater café. The third floor of the store usually has a lot of restaurant space, so that's a possibility.
It sounds like that's it on the food front for the moment - so as soon as we know more about what's planned for the cafe, we'll let you know.
