A Hot Dinners exclusive
We're always interested when a hitherto unexciting part of London suddenly starts to see a slew of interesting food and drink openings. Right now, that area is Baywater. Hot on the heels of the arrival of Jeremy King's The Park and the imminent opening of all the places at The Whiteley comes new wine bar Sol's. And while a new wine bar is always a good thing, this one sounds particularly interesting given the folk behind it.
The owner is Gabriel Chipperfield who, with his partners at the property group Wendover, are also behind chic Margate hotel Fort Road and the two hip central London newsagents/coffeeshops Shreeji News and Foreign Exchange News. He, in turn, has brought in food and wine writer Mina Holland to help with fleshing the project out and curating the low-intervention, European-focused wine list.
The final piece of the puzzle is chef-patron Henry Farrow who comes to this via restaurants and pubs in France and Norfolk. "Cooking in the south of France over the last year, I swapped butter for olive oil, crab for tuna, ale for rosé, and casseroles for couscous," he says, "but at Sol’s I am excited to unite those influences.”
From lunchtime the central table in the shop will be filled with salads and sandwiches - think jambon de Paris sarnies made with St John focaccia. In the early evening that'll switch up to a series of Med-led small plates like:
- Deep-fried panisse with aioli
- Mozzarella with griddled peach, basil and pine nuts
- Tortilla de patatas
Maybe Glastonbury headliner and foodie Dua Lipa will stop by when she knows they're serving her favourite dessert of vanilla ice cream topped with De Fermo olive oil.
