We've known for a while that Larry Jayasekara is opening The Cocochine with gallery owner Tim Jefferies in Mayfair. That restaurant should see the light of day this spring, but it's not the only project they've been working on. On the same road, they've also opened The Rex Delicatessen.
We had the chance to pop along to check out the new deli and it's a pretty impressive beast indeed.
Originally there were no plans to open the deli in this space - until they realised just what they had on their hands. At some point, this little section of Bruton Place used to be a small stable and it turned out that many of the original features remain, from the cobbled floor to the tiling and even the rings that the horses would be tied to. They've completely restored as many of the original features as possible, while enhancing with reclaimed wood furniture so it really brings to life the old look of the stables.
It's quite the setting and well worth heading down just to take a gander at the space, but we feel pretty sure that you'll be tempted by what's on offer too. Teaming up with Rowler Estate in Northamptonshire, there's a pretty impressive selection of pies, Wellingtons and more on offer. So you'll be able to pick up ready-to-eat beef and chicken pies, scotch eggs, or their sausage roll which looks like a mini Wellington itself (see photo below). On top of that, there are heat-at-home dishes like a Rowler lamb hotpot and a wonderful-sounding duck and pheasant lasagne, alongside sandwiches like a roast beef sandwich with pickled onion, rocket and horseradish yoghurt. Plus there's a selection of pastries including a very impressive-looking Paris-Brest.
There's lot more to the deli and they may also look at opening it as a wine bar in the evening at a later date. It's really adding something new to what's becoming a very interesting part of Mayfair (Jason Atherton is rumoured to be opening on the same street) so if you're in the area, it's worth popping in for a look.
