When are the Michelin 2024 stars announced for London and the UK

When will the 2024 London Michelin stars be announced?

This year's announcement will be on Monday 5 February 2024, starting at 6pm.

For the second year in a row the announcement ceremony will take place outside London. This year they're heading to Manchester, with the Midland Hotel being the focus for the main event. "We are honoured to be bringing our celebration of the finest British and Irish gastronomy to the welcoming and ever-evolving city of Manchester," said Michelin's Gwendal Poullennec.

On the day, we'll find out who's won stars this year, as well as who has won a green star (for sustainability) and some of the special awards. The guide itself will then be available to buy online only as they've stopped publishing a physical guide.

What about the Bib Gourmands?

Michelin's awards for best value-for-money restaurants will be revealed on Monday 29 January 2024. These are usually, but not exclusively, given to restaurants that aren't quite in the same price bracket as the starred restaurants.

How can I watch the announcement?

The awards will be streamed online from 6pm on 5 February and you'll be able to find them on Michelin's YouTube channel. We don't know yet who the presenter will be. We'd also highly recommend following the Michelin chat on Twitter or YouTube on the day so that you can join in the joy/incredulity in real time.

Expect the announcements also to appear on Michelin's Instagram page and Twitter feed

Do the chefs know in advance if they've won a star?

Normally, all invitees to a physical event who already have a star will be retaining theirs, but most of the restaurants who get shiny new stars will only find out on the day.

The only exception to advance notification is if they award three stars. That announcement has such an impact on a business that they usually get a little heads-up.

How many stars are usually awarded?

Michelin presents the stars for all of the UK and Ireland during the same event - but for London, and based on the past three years of awards, we'd normally expect around 10 restaurants to get new stars. That said, last year was a lean year for London with just six restaurants awarded stars. You can see all of London's Michelin-starred restaurants listed here.

This year... who knows. Hopefully, we'll get to see at least one new restaurant get to three Michelin stars. The last time that happened was back in 2021 when both Helene Darroze and Clare Smyth's restaurant got the third star.

And do they still matter?

Short answer: yes. While there's the usual debate around how Michelin may be out of touch with today's dining scene, no other restaurant awards (with the notable exception of World's 50 Best) get as much press as the Michelin reveal. Love them or loathe them, they're still a very big deal.

Which London restaurants currently have a Michelin Star?

In London, there are 74 Michelin-starred restaurants. There are five restaurants with three stars, 12 with two stars and 57 with one star. In early 2024 there will be at least two restaurants removed from the list as both Marcus and Le Gavroche close in December 2023.
