Updated 9/11/23 with menu details and new opening date
Over the past few years, Abhilash Jobanputra and Gabriel Unger have built up a loyal following for their Chai Guys stalls in places like Seven Dials Market, Covent Garden and Old Spitalfields Market. But this year marks the time when they switched it up as the pair are opening a bakery cafe in Notting Hill.
Their bakehouse on Portobello Road, next to the Electric Cinema, will serve pastries and sandwiches inspired by flavours from France, Scandinavia, Japan, and India. So think Cardamom-infused chai spice milk bread with salted butter, spiced egg sandos and Gujarati dhoklas with green chilli coriander chutney alongside soft-serve Chai.
Other bakery items on the launch menu we've had a look at include;
- Coffee cinnamon chocolate bun
- Miso mushroom garlic swirl
- Chai creme brulee danish
Obviously, there will be chai. In addition to their current masala and kadak chais there are two new options - Kesar Chai made with saffron and rose and Kashmiri Chai - a savoury chai that's naturally pink. There will also be a small space inside if you want to eat in. The arrival of Chai Guys means there's yet another interesting bakery option for the lucky Notting Hill crowd who've recently seen the likes of Hachi and Kuro opening there.
