Chakana sees ex-Lima head chef serve up Peruvian on Broadway Market

Eagle-eyed London Fields residents may have spotted the arrival of a new restaurant, Chakana, on Broadway Market. Turns out this is the new London outpost for chef Robert Ortiz who opened the first Chakana in Birmingham four years ago. Ortiz, you may remember, was also the head chef for Lima for years when it became the first Peruvian restaurant in Europe to gain a Michelin star. He left Lima in 2019 to head up to Moseley where he opened Chakana.

Chakana is billed as a "culinary journey inspired by Peru's rich traditions". It certainly pleased the Observer's critic Jay Rayner who described the food in his review as "all kinds of fabulous". The menu in London kicks off with ceviche and tiraditos before splitting into a series of mains including:

  • Hake Amazonia with roasted avocado and braised seaweed
  • Confit suckling pig with corn tamal, charapita chillies and ocopa sauce
  • Roasted aubergine with miso, fermented purple corn and fava beans

"The time has come to go back to London and cook again." said Ortiz of his return to the city.
