It's a good year for the team behind Trailer Happiness. Not only is their OG bar in Notting Hill celebrating its 20th birthday this year, but they're also on the verge of opening a new restaurant. Portobello 177 is taking over the space upstairs from the bar on Portobello Road where it'll have room for 50 diners.
Heading up the kitchen will be chef Shay Ola of the Rebel Dining Society who's describing his menu here as "sharing-style dishes with a focus on sustainability and seasonality, with a nod to Caribbean and Japanese barbecue culture." So far, so good. How that'll translate into dishes is shown in examples like the braised oxtail served with burnt padron pepper puree, caramelised carrot puree, carrot tops & sorrel leaves (pictured) and burnt peach & coconut sorbet with kombucha syrup, pickled berries, shiso & toasted sesame oil.
With the bar downstairs as a reference, the restaurant will serve up a weekly rotation of five cocktails inspired by dishes created in the kitchen that week. And with rum being the key note, the opening of the restaurant will also coincide with a new bottle shop opening as part of the development on Elgin Crescent. That will be specialising in high-end spirits and a weekly 'wild card' wine that'll also be served up in the restaurant.
