SideChick mixes cocktails and American soul food in an old Brixton pie and mash shop

SideChick mixes cocktails and American soul food in an old Brixton pie and mash shop

A new cocktail bar is coming to Brixton that looks like it will be well worth your attention.

It all comes from April Jackson, owner of Wood and Water and who you might have seen on The Apprentice and more TV besides. She's previously opened bars with partner Lee Tan in Pop Brixton, but this is their first permanent cocktail bar.

They've taken a space with a bit of local history - the old 1930s Eel & Pie House on Coldharbour Lane to transform it into SideChick. Inside, expect original features of the building, like the original stone pebble floor, mixed with decidedly more modern touches like tassels, pearls and feathers.

As for the drinks, they'll be split into Signatures, Fallen Friends and Forgotten Classics, including:

  • Portmore - fat washed aged rum with coffee & coconut
  • Pornstar Martini by Douglas Ankrah - Original Lab Recipe, vodka, passionfruit, vanilla
  • Floradora - dry gin, lime, raspberry, ginger ale

There's food too, with a menu inspired by American soul food. As April herself says, "The food will be a little naughty. I remember when I was living in New York, on Sundays I would devour a plate of Fried Chicken and Red Velvet Waffles in Brooklyn whilst a musician played R&B covers on his violin." So she's promising cornmeal crusted fried chicken, Cajun shrimp po'boys and sweet potato biscuits with maple butter among other treats.
