Counter 71 and Lowcountry bring a mix of British counter dining and the American south to Shoreditch

Counter 71 and Low Country bring a mix of counter dining and American cocktails to Shoreditch

11/6/23 - updated with the opening date

Joe Laker, the former head chef at Fulham's Fenn which is sadly closing at the end of April, already has his next place planned - a restaurant called Counter 71 and a bar, Low Country.

The restaurant will, as the name suggests, be all counter dining and is described as a seasonal "ode to the British Isles". On the menu, there will be dishes like a brown crab donut & scallop roe or eel tart with fried seaweed & caviar. He's joined in the kitchen by Sous Chef Michael Miles (previously at Manteca and Fenn).

As for the bar downstairs, Lowcountry will be all about the American South, with American whiskey being prominent in the cocktails, like the Blueberry Manhattan, made with blueberry-infused Whiskey, sweet and dry vermouth. They'll also have a martini flight, showcasing five martinis popular from 1888 to 2023. There will be snacks here too, like shrimp & grits prawn toast.

It's taken over the old Duke of Wellington pub site, just north of Old Street roundabout.
