Updated 13/1/23 with opening date
When Filipino coffee house and bakery Kapihan closed their doors in Battersea back in October 2021 their departure was met with genuine sadness from the legions of fans they'd built up during their stay there. But, having spent the intervening period travelling and gaining inspiration, the team - consisting of siblings David, Nigel and Rosemary Motley along with David's wife Plams - are back and gearing up for a new opening in the same area.
Over the past few months, they've been dropping hints on their plans. We know that the new cafe will look like a modern take on a Bahay Kubo - a stilt house that's a classic piece of Filipino architecture. On the menu will be their popular Filipino pastries and bakery goods like the classic bibingka rice cake alongside ensaymada, leche flan and sourdough pandesal.
They're promising a weekend special of Enspeyal Royale Bibingka made with a house-cured salted egg, ube halaya (purple yam cooked with coconut milk, butter and sugar) and finished with quesa de bola. That sounds like a pretty excellent way to kickstart any weekend morning. You can pre-order that on their website as there will only be limited availability.
Coffee is a big part of what they do. They roast their own from single origin beans from the Philippines and that's also available on delivery by mail order too.
In addition to this opening, you can also look out for a larger Kapihan focusing on their coffee roastery and panaderia. Apparently, they had been looking at a site in Vauxhall but that fell through. As they say, "rest assured something is brewing and baking."
