When Soho restaurant Sucre launched, they also opened their cocktail bar Abajo. However, after a somewhat chilly reception, they've had a rethink and the bar is getting an overhaul and reopening as Alma.
A quick look at the design shows some big changes. If you've been to the original, this revamp seems like it's not as dark as the original bar (and its glow-in-the-dark cocktails) and it looks like it's all been redesigned in a slightly more traditional layout - banquettes, bar down the back as opposed to through the room and more. All 1970s-inspired, they say.
This time it's being run by Tony Pescatori, previously at Nightjar, with cocktails including:
- The Palm - Ciroc Vodka, Fresh Date and Mango Juice, Yemeni Myrrh, Veuve Clicquot Brut Champagne
- Clay - Chivas Mizunara Whisky, Ming River Baijiu, Osmanthus Tea, Makrut Lime & Green Szechuan, Umeboshi, Preserved plum
- Kunama - Trois Rivières Agricole Rum, Grand Marnier, Ethiopia Women's Bulessa Cold Brew Coffee, A Splash of Wray & Nephew Rum, Amaro Santoni, Ethiopian Korekima spice
There will also be snacks, similar to the style of food upstairs. So there will be cheese and onion empanadas, mini stone bass tostadas and pork belly & spiced pineapple sandwiches.
