The Cross was HUGE back in the day. The nightclub, which was in the space that is now Coal Drops Yard, was one of London's most renowned back in the 90s - a really big deal. But with all the reconstruction of King's Cross, it finally closed its doors back in 2007.
Now it's coming back - albeit in a very different guise. THe Cross will take over what was King's Cross pub The Driver (which closed for good during the pandemic). It turns out, according to The Camdenist, that The Driver was actually owned by original Cross founder Billy Reilly, who together with his wife Gemma are spearheading this relaunch.
Here at Hot Dinners, we've been to The Driver a good few times - it's a six-floored venue that's also blessed with a great roof terrace space. So it's a very different beast from the original Cross. It's going through a complete redesign at the moment with "best quality marble fittings and designer upholstery throughout" and lots of velvet and it's going to be a mix of club, dining room and lounge.
As for how it's all split out - here's what we know. The club's in the basement, there's a bar on the ground floor, the first floor is the restaurant, second floor the lounge (where you can keep a table if you head down to the club for a bit), the quieter red room is on floor three and there's still that roof terrace at the top. Going back to the food, that'll be an all-day restaurant affair serving dishes like octopus carpaccio, scallop ceviche, glazed pork chop and roast cauliflower. Cocktails, meanwhile, will include a Hazelnut Old Fashioned.
Sounds like it'll be very different from both the original Cross and also from its previous guise as The Driver. We'll have to see if it'll be as huge a hit as the original club.
