Updated 19/9/24 with full opening details
After years of popping up at various places across London, the first AngloThai restaurant from John and Desiree Chantarasak is very nearly here. They settled on a space in Marylebone (where The Gate used to be) and now we have the full details of what's planned for their permanent home.
If you've tried them before, the restaurant carries on the theme of marrying together the best of British ingredients with Thai recipes, with a focus on contemporary presentation and techniques. We're also told that charcoal cooking and coconut smoking will be a big thing on the menu and they'll be pressing their own coconut cream on site. They even highlight how their "turbo jet woks" will give them wok-hei (breath of the wok), something we know Uncle Roger will be very happy about, going by his videos.
Some of the dishes from the menu will include:
- Red Flesh Plum, Candied Beetroot & Suffolk Rapeseed (with the beetroot candied in Black Bee single-origin honey)
- Brixham Crab, Exmoor Caviar & Coconut Ash Cracker - which sees white crab and caviar on the fantastic crackers we tried at Outcrop
- Lion’s Mane Mushroom & Sunflower Seed Satay
- Ryall Farm Hogget Massaman & Black Fig
- Monkfish Jungle Curry & Holy Basil (with the monkfish cooked over coconut husks)
As for the desserts, they're going to include a Carrot & Sea Buckthorn Parfait, which is inspired by mango sticky rice. And for all of the above, there will be both an a la carte menu or a seasonally changing chef's selection set menu.
The wine side of AngloThai is just as big a deal, run by Desiree, with a particular focus on "thoughtful producers that sight excellent craftsmanship at the forefront of grape growing, harvesting and wine production." It'll be a European-focused list, and they're aiming for both accessible price points and the odd "exceptional premium bottles". Their house wine, meanwhile, sees them teaming up with Nibiru Wines from Austria’s Kamptal region. They'll also be featuring London wine from Blackbook winery in Battersea.
As for the restaurant itself, that will seat 50 and feature an open kitchen, with Thai-American designer May Redding in charge of the design. They've also been working to get bespoke furniture made with indigenous Chamchuri wood from Chiang Mai, including for their private dining room called Baan (although that will open in 2025).
All in all, this looks very promising and should be one of the big hits of autumn.
