Another sad closure has been announced as the result of the lockdown - The Shepherdess Cafe on City Road. The cafe has been much-loved by locals for 37 years, but the owners posted a note on Facebook about its demise:
It is with great sadness after 37 years we have decided to close the Shepherdess. Circumstances, Covid-19, increased rents and a lack of sympathy from agents and landlords have all come together and forced the issue.
A very big THANK YOU to all our staff who were loyal all those years and made the Shepherdess the friendly greasy spoon cafe that it was. We will miss you all but it is time to move on. Enjoy retirement or find a new venture... we shall see!
The lockdown has been extremely hard on hospitality and while some landlords have given rent holidays while restaurants, bars and cafes are getting back on their feet - we're inevitably going to see more closures as the year goes on. Here's hoping that number is as small as possible.
