Kinilaw and Buko are bringing Filipino food and ice-cream to Hoxton

In a nutshell: Hoxton gets a Filipino restaurant and cocktail bar

Summing it all up: It's a two for one at this new Hoxton restaurant where you can try the Filipino take on ceviche and a menu of artisan ice-creams served in young coconut shells.


The low-down

Is Filipino food having a moment in London? Earlier this summer we saw the opening of Mamasons Filipino ice-cream store in Soho. We have the upcoming Jollibee later this month and now we're hearing about Kinilaw & Buko - a new place opening up on Hoxton Street.

Taking over the site next to 100 Hoxton, this restaurant and cocktail bar is from the same team. Filipino Head Chef Francis Puyat, along with 100 Hoxton Founder Andrew Zilouf, have repurposed their former events space next door to let Francis return to his restaurant roots.

It's a tale of two halves. Kinilaw focuses on the Filipino version of ceviche - it uses palm vinegar and kalamansi instead of lime. Dishes on this menu will include Bagoong fisherman’s treat,(daikon fermented shrimp, green peppercorns and friend garlic), Mustasa cradled duck egg (salted duck egg, heirloom tomato, mustard leaf and grated cured yolk) and Diver hauls kapis treasure (hand-dived scallop, cucumber, radish, lime and fermented roe). Yes we want to try it all too.

The Buko side of things is all about artisan Filipino ice cream served in baby coconut shells. Low in carbs and saturated fats, vegan, vegetarian and dairy free friendly, desserts here will range from Red Bean Butterscotch Bomb, (red bean ice cream, miso butterscotch sauce and ginger Anzac biscuit), to Pop Star (lychee ice cream with sumac popping candy).

On the drinks front, the bar team next door at 100 Hoxton - Chad and Tim - have come up with a new cocktail menu and there'll also be a short list of wines and craft beers.
