Notting Hill

Just over a year after opening in Notting Hill, the team behind Zima are changing tack. And what was a caviar and dumplings restaurant is now becoming Sova, a wine bar focusing on Eastern and Central Europe.

To help the switchover, they've brought in consultant sommelier Cristian Vega, who's behind the list at St James stalwart Wilton's, along with local hotspot Pollini at Ladbroke Hall. He's put together a low and no-intervention wine list with interesting wines, including a Ukrainian-style fizz, Serbian Pinot Grigio, Hungarian Riesling and, as you might imagine, a strong showing

Italian sandwiches have become a big thing in London of late - we even have a guide to the best. And the sandwich shop that has been leading the charge, Dal Fiorentino, is going west for the first time.

Best known for their enormous focaccia sandwiches, there are lots of options to choose from. There's the Fiorentina (fennel salami, pecorino cheese, truffle honey, extra virgin olive oil), the Machiavelli (Tuscan pancetta, stracciatella cheese, nduja cream, grilled courgettes)

The Public House Group are known for launching new openings with little fanfare (like The Hart, Canteen and The Fat Badger), and that's the case once again with their latest, CeCe's.

Unlike their recent openings, this isn't a pub, although they are taking over a space that was once a pub, so it's not a massive departure. It's being billed as an Italian with a "hint of Hollywood". So it sounds like it's going for the glam kind of Italian restaurant that Martin Kuczmarski has been so successful with at The Dover and Martino's. The full menu is yet to be revealed, but dishes

Taqueria in Notting Hill has been one of London's most longstanding Mexican restaurants, having opened on Westbourne Grove some 20 years ago. However, they've decided that after two decades, it's time for a bit of a rethink, and they've found the ideal man to help with that. Last year, Jackson Boxer breathed new life into his Notting Hill restaurant Orasay by relaunching it as Dove, and now he's helping to do the same with Taqueria, which is relaunching as TAQ. 

To do that, Boxer is teaming up with chef Eduardo Yishima, who himself has a good pedigree in London Mexican

They only recently opened in Westbourne Grove but now Alley Cats are opening their next restaurant on Portobello Road, barely a 15-minute walk away. 

Their latest pizza restaurant is adding something that none of the others have, though - a slice hatch. So if you don't fancy waiting for a table, you'll be able to grab an 18-inch slice from said hatch. There may be fewer banks in London these days, but quite a lot of those ex-banks are being converted into impressive-looking restaurants. Recently we've had the opening of Aki London in Marylebone and next up is KINZ, a new Lebanese restaurant that's coming to Notting Hill. 

It's been put together by a trio, brothers Jad and Karim Lahoud and Rasha Khouri Bruzzo. The Lahouds, in particular, have been influenced by their parents, who were both chefs. As Jad says "Growing

January might not seem like the best time of year to be talking about ice cream, but by the time Darlish's two new parlours open in Spring, it'll be a different story. If you haven't been to their Spitalfields shop on Brushfield Street before, then the USP here is that the ice creams are inspired by the Middle East, so think saffron, rose and pistachio or Turkish coffee. Their breakaway hit has been a baklava ice cream sandwich.

Very under the radar, and first spotted by industry newsletter Propel, Victor Garvey, the chef behind Michelin-starred SOLA, has opened his latest restaurant in Notting Hill.

Called Materia Prima (but also listed as Mater1a), the restaurant is one that's focused on seasonal produce and "simplicity" and the chef describes it as "my own little world that I’d like to personally invite people into, one service at a time." Taking inspiration from Japan in particular, there are multiple options for tasting menus (starting at £99) and some of the signature dishes on the menu

Notting Hill continues to hoover up much of the interesting restaurant openings this year with the news that they're about to get a new slice shop on top of everything else. Slayer is a pizza-by-the-slice operation that's being opened up by the same team behind the area's popular brunch spot, Eggbreak.

They're describing it as "a love letter to NYC pizza culture" which is something we can certainly get behind.
