Smoking Goat Thai BBQ arrives on Denmark Street

Smoking GoatAn old Soho dive bar on Denmark Street is due to be reopen this Monday 27th as a Thai Barbecue drinking den next month with an exciting crew at the helm.

Co-founder Ben Chapman has pulled together a small but talented team working together on the project. Head chef Seb Homes comes straight from another Thai kitchen, the Begging Bowl in Peckham. Holmes will be joined by Gino Tighe who has worked at The Quality Chophouse. Front of house will be overseen by Thom Lawson who will be putting his experience working for the Caravan group to good use.

When open, Smoking Goat will serve a short daily menu with a focus on cooking over wood and with traditional pestles & mortars. Dishes include:

  • Whole chilli crab
  • Coal roast scalop and red nam jin
  • Smoked lamb belly and jaew basted with chilli, fermented shrimp & fish sauce, smoked over chestnut wood
  • Slow wood roast duck with palm sugar, pandanas, kaffir

These barbecue dishes will be served with 'Som Tam' (hot and sour papaya salad) and fiery Jaew dipping sauces straight from the pestle & mortars.

‘We're deeply into wood smoke, chilli, fermented and palm sugar flavours and are building a good relationship with some fantastic Cornish farms who are supplying us with some astonishing ingredients’ says Holmes. The team are also working directly with South Coast growers to source really fresh home-grown chilli and Thai herbs.

The team are keen to keep a late night dive bar feel, and are avid vinyl collectors so music plays a big role they as look to draw upon the musical heritage of Denmark Street, inviting 'a few musical friends' to play records late into the night. Certainly something worth keeping an eye out for on social media.

Hot Dinners contributor Zeren Wilson has helped develop the wine and drinks list which also features newly opened One Mile End Brewery who are releasing a special brew for Smoking Goat.
