Far Rockaway restaurant, bar and art space comes to Curtain Road

farrockawayA big new Shoreditch spot, named after a neighbourhood in Queens, launches on Curtain Road this week. Far Rockaway bills itself as a place where "New York's compelling urban culture comes to the heart of Shoreditch". In practice that means a 400 capacity space with DJs, a cocktail bar, restaurant, art space - even a comic library at your disposal.

Visually Far Rockaway sounds like it'll be pretty amazing with original works by neon artist Andy Doig and street artists Xenz, Above, Lucas Price, Cranio, Cept and Guy Denning creating work for the space.

On the food and drink front there'll be cocktails on draught and frozen Margaritas. Bar food will include pizza by the slice, spit-roasted organic chicken and suckling pig. Yes, there'll be burgers, and meatball heros, not to mention burritos and wings. You get the picture. More menu highlights include slow roasted baby back cola ribs, blackened salmon fillets, pulled five-spice duck and for dessert, vanilla bourbon cheesecake or traditional Knickerbocker Glory.

And if all that leaves you needing a quiet space, you can peruse the 4000-strong library of DC and Marvel comic books.

As for their New York namesake. Well we can't claim to know much about the area, but one person on Twitter did express surprise asking if the people behind this place "had ever been to Far Rockaway? I mean, you wouldn't call a bar in NYC 'Hounslow' would you?" But c'mon - it's got a DJ booth built out of boomboxes which looks pretty cool (to us oldies).

Far Rockaway opens on Friday 11 October 2013 at 97-113 Curtain Road, London EC2A 3BS  0208 305 3090 Opening Times: Monday - Tuesday 10.00am-00.00am, Wednesday - Saturday 10.00am-02.00am Sunday 10.00am-22.00pm. Follow them on Twitter @farrockawayE1
