Chinatown London's stay put boxes

Who among us doesn't get uplifted by a wander through Chinatown? The sights, the smells and, of course, the food. For September, there's now an added reason to head to the area. Some of Chinatown's best-known restaurants have come up with special Love Chinatown “Take-Put” Boxes.

The idea's simple and all the better for it. Served up in the traditional style Chinese take out box, each restaurant taking part has come up with one or two dishes that you can take out for alfresco dining. Some are menu favourites, others are brand new dishes. But you don't have to go far to enjoy it - there's now loads of outdoor seating set up in Newport Place, decorated with imagery of koi carp and lotus flowers by the paper cutting artist Samantha Quinn.

You can choose from Malaysian dishes by C&R Cafe, Taiwanese home-style classics from Old Tree Daiwan Bee, Cantonese classics from Plum Valley and Vietnamese street food from Viet Food among others. Meat and fish courses are £10 a box and vegetarian options are £8.

You can find the full list of participating restaurants and the options on the Chinatown London website. We've had a good look through the options and picked out some highlights including:

  • Bun House - Chu Hou Beef Brisket Rice or Garlic Chicken Fried Rice and a Custard Bun (£10)
  • Dumplings’ Legend - Spicy Seafood Noodles with Jumbo Prawns, Squid, Sliced Fish Cake with Spring Onions (£10)
  • Old Tree Daiwan Bee - Taiwanese Train Bento - Pork Chop, Braised Pork, Pickles and Stewed Egg (£10)
  • Shanghai Modern - Spinach, Pak Choi, Vermicelli and Mushroom Dumplings (£8)

There's also a range of desserts and bubble teas being offered at £5 and we rather fancy trying the Shiratama Dango Platter from Tsujiri.

As for the famous Chinatown lanterns, the traditional red ones have been swapped for special multi-coloured lanterns - 100 of which have been signed by Chinatown London business-owners, supporters of the area and influencers. And there's a digital screen popping-up in Newport Place where Chinatown visitors can share their messages of goodwill or simply give a shout out to their favourite Chinatown London restaurants.

If you do go down, make sure you share any photos on Instagram with the hashtag #LoveChinatown and tagging @chinatownlondon.
