If you've ever looked at your ham and cheese sarnie and considered that you might be doing lunch all wrong, then you're not alone. A new survey has revealed that the UK is tired of cold, limp sandwiches, fancying something way more exciting for their lunch. The YouGov survey of more than 2000 folk up and down the country found that more than a quarter of adults thought bread sandwiches were the most boring option at lunchtime and 16% fancied something hot instead.
This is where Mexican restaurant group Tortilla comes in. This week they're taking to the streets of London to give city workers a lunchtime glow-up, giving away hundreds of free quesadillas. If you want to take your sorry sarnie and get it magically transformed into a quesadilla, you'll need to head to Greenwich on Thursday 12 December between 11am-2pm. That's when Tortilla Greenwich (Opposite Cutty Sark Station) will be rescuing Londoners from their lacklustre lunches.
Here's how it works. Come along to the popup, hosted by Tik Tok funnyman Tommy Solemnon, between 11am-2pm, and their magic Quesadilla 5000 machine will turn everyone's offerings into hot, melty quesadillas. So you bring your store-bought sandwich and Tortilla will exchange it for a FREE quesadilla which usually costs £6.95.* (All the sandwiches collected will be donated to local charities such as the Greenwich Homeless Project and the 999 Club).
If you can't make it to Greenwich there's also going to be a Mini Quesadilla 5000 (on wheels) cruising between Tortilla’s in Spitalfields (Brushfield St, E1 6AT), Leadenhall (Leadenhall Market, EC3V 1LR) and London Bridge (Tooley St, SE1 2TH) on the same day. That'll also be turning store-bought sandwich donations into quesadillas between 11am-2pm - catch it if you can, only available while stocks last!
"Think of our quesadillas as Mexican toasties," is how Tortilla marketing director Megan Burton-Brown puts it. "They transform the humble sandwich into something actually delicious: less bread, more filling...melted cheese, fresh customisable ingredients, and a sauce for dipping – satisfaction you just can't get from a regular sarnie!"
Plus - a Christmas special
Of course, you might be craving something a little more Christmassy at this time of year and Tortilla is very much up to the challenge. They've got a limited-edition Festive Quesadilla, stuffed with Somerset Camembert and Cranberry & Chipotle Salsa. So given if you can't make the pop-up, that's available throughout the festive season.
*Quesadilla exchange offer is available while stocks last.
