London has an amazing selection of Middle Eastern restaurants, but the offering doesn't often drill down to Egyptian food specifically. So the arrival of Alaz on Chiswick High Road is hoping to introduce Londoners to the delights of that country's cuisine. The restaurant is a partnership between Egyptian TV network owner Alaa El Kahky and caterer Sabrina Tolba. Tolba comes from a family of restaurateurs - her dad ran the Pharoahs restaurant in Teddington.
As for the food you can expect to find traditional dishes like koshari - the country's national dish which is a mixture of pasta, fried rice and lentils, along with hawashi which is grilled minced beef with onions and herbs in a crispy folded pita bread. Drinks are similarly Egyptian-focused with karkadeh (hibiscus tea) and karak (coffee with cardamon and saffron) on offer.
"Egyptians love gatherings over food and entertaining large groups," says Sabrina, "so this will be like having lots of people over at my house and I get the chance to cook for them."
