Updated 17/6/24 with menu details
For the first time since it opened in 1987, The River Cafe is opening a new café - although it's not far at all from the original. In fact, it's right next door.
The River Café Café as they've decided to call it, is in a small space next to the main restaurant and, clearly hoping for an actual summer, it'll have its own terrace too. This is no ordinary café, of course, as they're saying it will have an Italian menu prepared by River Cafe chefs.
An Instagram post promised an all day menu starting with breakfast of River Cafe brioche and takeaway coffee moving to wine and aperitivo in the evenings. and cakes, melon and peaches.
A look at an early menu shows it split loosely into bread, salumi, formaggi and then main courses.
Dishes include
- Bruschetta with lardo di Colonnata
- Vitello tonnato
- Grilled red and yello peppers
- Abruzzese lentils with garden summer herbs
Prices range from £4 for basic bruschetta to £26 for that vitello dish, so the price point is a lot more affordable than the main restaurant.
The main restaurant is blessed with a menu at prices that could be considered slightly eye-watering (all the second courses at the time of writing are £50+ each), so maybe this new cafe will be an opportunity to see what the River Cafe has to offer without consulting your bank manager first.
