El Cenote aims to give Camden folk an authentic Mexican experience with top tacos and margaritas

el cenote mexican bar and restaurant opening in camden

The idea of opening a Mexican margarita and tacos joint somewhere like Camden definitely seems like it makes good business sense. But what makes the arrival of El Cenote interesting is that rather than being one of those chain restaurants, this is an bar devised and run by two Mexicans.

Owner Aima Indigo is a Mexican model turned restaurateur who used to work at La Bodega Negra and Mexcalito. Joining her, and running the kitchen here, is Daniel Sanchez. Born in Mexico City he helped open Ella Canta with top chef Marta Ortiz and has also worked at places like the well-respected Chingon Tacos. The pair have taken over the old Bar Gansa site just off Camden High Street for their first joint venture.

For their Camden bar, there will be as much focus on the food as the drinks. Expect to find favourites like birria tacos and Carne Asada Norteña (marinated steak that's been grilled and thinly sliced) on the menu alongside plant-based options like sweet potato or crispy mushroom tacos.

As for the drinks, obviously there will be margaritas on offer, with options including their signature El Cenote - a twist on the classic made with cucumber and blue curaco and a coconut margarita coloured like the Mexican flag.
