13/8/24 - updated with more details about the launch.
We reported earlier that JKS(the group behind Gymkhana, Hoppers, the nearby Sabor and lots, lots more) were taking over the building where Momo used to be and now they've revealed what's planned for the space.
Called Ambassador's Clubhouse, it is, as we expected, much closer to Gymkhana and Brigadiers in terms of cuisine. The cooking will focus on "the cuisine of undivided Punjab". That includes lesser-known kebabs cooked across the tandoor, sigri and tawa, curries, biryanis, tandoor-roasted breads and more. Planned for the menu are:
- Kala Chana Chaat, featuring betel leaves served with masala black chickpeas, mint chutney and tamarind chutney.
- Rara Rabbit Hariyali Keema - with fenugreek, spinach and fresh Pakistani chillies
- Tandoori Quail Barrah Pilau, served under a saffron and brown onion-laced pilau.
- Shahi Patiala Lobster Korma
To us, it sounds more like Brigadiers than Gymkhana, as it's a pretty big space, taking up both the ground floor (including what was once Mo Diner) and the basement space, fitting in 140 people, with a big terrace outside (it is on Heddon Street, after all). They'll also have three private rooms, and we're promised a "maximalist central bar with a gold dome" in the main dining room.
As for the drinks, tequila and mezcal are the key spirits here, with the star of the show being the Punjabi Margarita made with north Indian fruits and citrus and paired with chaat masala spiced salts. They'll also be the only restaurant in the UK with Kingfisher Ultra beer on the menu.
It's been a long time since the closure of Momo, but if anyone can make this huge space work, it's JKS.
