The Ducksoup team are opening Camille in Borough

camille restaurant opening in borough

2/2/24 - Updated with opening details

The SE1 dining scene is totally on fire right now. Hard on the heels of Kolae and Akara opening comes another upcoming restaurant that'll cement Borough's reputation for hot new openings. Camille is the place in question and the team behind it are Clare Lattin and Tom Hill, founders of Ducksoup and Little Duck and, most recently, Emilia down in Devon.

The pair along with business partner Ratnesh Bagdai (co-founder of Brindisa Kitchens) have also scored when it comes to their head chef,  ex-St John chef Elliot Hashtroudi, most recently seen cooking up a storm at his residency at 107 in Clapton (formerly P Franco).

Camille will be an Entente Cordiale of a restaurant. Think French bistro with a wine list focusing on small French producers and dishes using the best of British produce, much of which will be sourced from across the road in the market.

"My cooking is inspired by provincial French cuisine," says Elliot, "but using what’s right on our doorstep." On the menu that translates to dishes like:

  • Crab toast, three cornered garlic, crab bisque
  • Trotter and parsley terrine
  • Ox tongue poached in veal stock, pan fried with black trompettes
  • Langoustine cassoulet
  • Lemon sole with snail butter

On top of that, you can expect smoked eel devilled eggs alongside fried Jerusalem artichoke with homemade aioli and weekly specials of house-made sausages and charcuterie. That's before finishing up with desserts like a Yorkshire rhubarb mille feuille. As for drinks, there will be a low-intervention and biodynamic French focus as well as classic French apéros and digestifs.

The restaurant has taken over the old Sons + Daughters sandwich shop site and will have room for about 32 diners, with more out on the terrace when the weather gets a little warmer.

It all sounds extremely promising, and there's nothing quite like it in Borough Market, so it's definitely one to check out.
