There’ll be a new reason to dance, dine and linger into the wee hours in Covent Garden soon. With the pandemic closure of Roadhouse, once one of the area’s oldest live-music venues, there’s been a gap in the market (actually, beneath Covent Garden Market) waiting to be filled. Step up, Stereo, the latest initiative from global hospitality brand Experimental Group who also have a hotel, Da Henrietta just up the road.
You can expect a mash-up of influences – they reference both New York’s and London’s late-night cultures alongside Parisian chic – in a 500-capacity space, where you could start with aperitifs while listening to relaxing music from the house band, stay for dinner in the 40-seater restaurant, and then throw some shapes on the dancefloor to the tunes of the resident DJ.
Foodwise, there’ll be American-style bar classics from consulting chef-restaurateur Andrew Clarke (of Acme Fire Cult fame- and ex-Brunswick House and St Leonards).
There’s also a compelling drinks menu, featuring South Bermondsey’s microbrewery Partizan, The Lakes Distillery, Biercraft, Hine Cognac, as well as bespoke vodka and gin blends created by Thames Distillers. Stereo are also ticking a few sustainability boxes by storing spirits in 25L tanks (minimising glass/transportation usage) and there’ll be no single-use plastics in the venue. And if you think the height of the bar feels endless, particularly after a few cocktails, it’s actually a bit of trickery from designers Afroditi, who have worked magic with 88 globes and a reflective ceiling.
