Ground control to David Bowie fans: Heddon Street will already be familiar to you as the location for the Ziggy Stardust album photo cover in 1972, which is commemorated by a blue plaque. Now, just a few doors down, the tribute to the musician continues with The Starman, which opened in early July.
Taking over the old Strawberry Moon bar/club site, The Starman brings some ch-ch-changes (sorry; we’ll stop this) to Mayfair’s dining scene. The team behind it is Barworks, who recently opened Gas Station in King’s Cross as well as Hackney’s Mare Street Market. The tribute to Bowie pretty much stops at the name and landmark site, so if you were anticipating Ziggy Stardust cupcakes or food masquerading as Bowie merch, know that perfectly poured pints and hearty bar fare is what awaits instead.
Here's a sample of what you can expect on the food front:
- Jersey rock oysters with lemon and shallot vinegar
- Devilled kidneys with homemade mustard and parsley
- Beef and bone marrow pie with mash
- Soy glazed tofu with pak choy, brown rice, ginger and coriander
There’s a very decent drinks list, with wines from around the globe, as well as an extensive range of (mostly UK) draught beers, gluten-free, low-and-no offerings, and a broad spirits selection.
