15/6/22 - updated with opening details
If you’ve been keeping an eye on the new Sayer Street development of the already burgeoning Elephant Park area of London’s revamped Elephant & Castle, then we have reassuring news about one of its soon-to-open restaurants. Amid the new shopping destination and residential hub will be Rarebit, the latest venture from Mark Angell, formerly co-founder of Clapham's The Rookery, and Will Nias.
The all-day kitchen, bar and restaurant will seat 55 people inside and 16 on the terrace, and the focus is modern British cuisine. It sees British-Caribbean head chef Liv Lionel returning to London after a decade honing her skills at other UK establishments, including as head chef at Lazy Fin as well as the well-regarded vegetarian–vegan pub The Prince George, both in Brighton.
On the menu, dishes include:
- Scallops with black pudding and a pea purée
- Crispy new potatoes in garlic and parsley butter
- Broccoli in harissa yoghurt with sesame seeds and chilli
- Deep-fried soft shell crab, with jalapeño, garlic, coriander and parsley sauce
- English asparagus with sweet pickled red onion, lemon aioli and sourdough crumb
As well as Liv’s creations, you can expect high-quality items from local producers, such as bread and pastries from Flor and cheese from Neal’s Yard Dairy.
There’ll also be craft beers (including draught from London Beer Factory), an extensive wine selection to takeaway or enjoy at the bar (with modest corkage), as well as classic cocktails.
Oh, and rarebit, hence the name.
