SpiceBox is bringing vegan curry to Leytonstone with their second restaurant

17/9/21 - Updated with menu details and the opening date

What: SpiceBox

In a nutshell: New vegan curry house for Leytonstone

Summing it all up: SpiceBox, the popular vegan curry house, having opened its first outlet in Walthamstow in 2019, is about to open a second site in autumn, this time in Leytonstone.

The low-down

Vegan curry fans rejoice, especially if you live in East London. SpiceBox founder Grace Regan is opening a second outlet, following the success of her first in Walthamstow, and it will be just down the road in Leytonstone. And if you’re a fan of the original restaurant (or ever struggled to get a table), the good news is that this one will be even bigger, both in terms of space and menu.

Located on the former premises of Vietnamese restaurant District Mot, the new SpiceBox will have an expanded dinner selection, as well as a jazzed-up weekend brunch. Seating up to 90 people, it’ll be one of Leytonstone’s largest restaurants - so the pressure is on to make this both accessible to new diners as well as rewarding for their loyal followers.

Regulars will be aware of SpiceBox’s commitment to sustainability, having used the tiffin club to receive takeaways in reusable metal tiffin containers, or sourced a delivery from an electric-bike-riding driver (rather than some of the more mainstream delivery services attempting to corner the home-delivery market).

So, what’s on the new bigger and better menu? Here are some of the new creations:

  • Bhaigan Bharta – a whole fire-roasted aubergine in a spiced tomato sauce
  • Mushroom Madras – roasted portobello mushrooms in a creamy, spicy tomato sauce
  • Samosa Chaat – smashed samosa, fresh kachumber, crispy sev, date and tamarind chutney, raita
  • Mango and Coconut Chia Pudding – mango puree gently spiced with black pepper and chilli on top of a creamy coconut chia pudding. Served with Grace’s granola

They'll also have a full Indian breakfast at the weekend and brunch dishes include Keralan fried chick’n, spicy tomato ketchup, raita, and golden syrup.

Wines will be on tap from Borough Wines while cocktails are by The Cocktail Society, including a Masala Chai Negroni - gin, vermouth, Campari, masala chai. So if you're a fan of the original, or even yet to check them out - this looks very promising.
