What: The Coal Office

In a nutshell: Tom Dixon's HQ gets a restaurant from the chef behind The Palomar

Summing it all up: With eyepopping interiors by Tom Dixon and food by Palomar chef and restaurateur Assaf Granit, the first restaurant to open at Coal Drops Yard, The Coal Office, sets the bar for the new development sky high.

The low-down

As Coal Drops Yard at King's Cross gears up for its official opening on 26 October, the first restaurant there has already opened its doors. The Coal Office is the restaurant at Tom Dixon's new headquarters and it's a collaboration between the designer and chef Assaf Granit who brought us places like The Palomar and The Barbary.

They describe it as "a place where you can experience fresh, creative food in a variety of beautifully designed and atmospheric spaces, where the provenance is explained, the tableware is available to buy, and the recipes are shared." And it looks very chic.

A quick squint at the menu shows that, in modern London fashion, it's split into a variety of snacks, small and larger plates. And the dishes sound really interesting. So there's a Lions Gate pretzel on a stick for a snack - with za'atar for dipping, although you're probably going to want to order the £4.50 'Plate for the brave'. Nope, we've no idea what that is either.

Small plates include the polenta dish that fired everyone up when they first opened The Palomar and sashimi Uri Style with kingfish and a ginger vinaigrette. Going up a size there's a midnight shawarma with baked bone marrow, freekeh risotto with skordalia cream and black aubergine and a seafood chraime which comes with a tomato and pepper stew served with Yemen pancake.

Desserts include a focus on their own homemade icecreams with flavours like fig leaf and fig leaf's oil or red grapefruit and verbena sorbet. Or, if you fancy something more rib-sticking at the end of the meal, you might be tempted by Uri's Mother's Fig Basbossa with tahini ice-cream.
