What: Roof Deck Restaurant & Bar at Selfridges
In a nutshell: The rooftop restaurant goes Californian.
Summing it all up: The regular rooftop restaurant at Selfridges is back. This time, they'll have a Californian approach to cooking.
The low-down
Selfridge’s rooftop is quickly become THE place to wine and dine, following the extremely successful wastED event. Now the summer is (dare we say it out loud) approaching quickly, they’re gearing up for the warmer weather with The Roof Deck Restaurant Bar, in collaboration with Des McDonald. It's the latest restaurant from the same people who brought us Forest and Winter.
It’ll open from 11am serving up small plates and starters that themed around fresh, nourishing Californian cooking, all in a suitably be-decked-out rooftop with palm trees, hanging drapes, wicker lamps et al.
Some of the many small plates on offer include:
- San Francisco sourdough, cocoa & molasses pumpernickel, whipped ash butter £5
- Tuna ceviche, kohlrabi, avocado, cilantro, bonito flakes £14
- Coal grilled burger, butter bun, mango & chipotle salsa £14
- Prawns a la plancha, blistered corn & pomegranate £18
- Avocado & pistachio ice cream sandwich £8
The menu is a joint effort from Steve Tonkin, who’s had experience at the Dean Street Townhouse and the Ivy Group, and Baran Baltaci, a former senior sous chef at the Ivy.
Passing a lazy afternoon on a (hopefully) sun-drenched London rooftop feels almost sad without a fine drink in hand while you take in the view, so it’s good news that The Roof Decks’ drinks also look suitably summery. There’ll a cucumber and chilli margarita, a watermelon martini and a G&T made with cherry blossom-infused gin, and frozen cocktails too. Fuel up with some choice picks from the bar snacks menu as well, like jalapeno cornbread and cocoa molasses sourdough with whipped ash butter.
