Summing it all up: Joining the flurry of openings in N16 comes Bergen House, with a menu laden with choices, from grazing plates to sharers for two, Sunday roasts, specials, affordable wines and a classic English pudding selection.
The low-down
In the latter part of 2017 we saw plenty of new restaurants popping up in the Newington Green and Stokie area, not to mention the arrival of our readers’ favourite new restaurant of the year, Andi’s, back in April.
Now, the area’s getting yet another in the form of Bergen House, who’re bringing a menu full of sharing plates and Sunday lunches. The headliner looks to be “a banging steak and fries”, a straightforward meal of steak cooked to your liking, a green salad and fries covered in their “dench Bergen Sauce” (that’s dench in the Lethal Bizzle sense not the Dame Judy sense ….) with a free second helping if you’re up for it. Which we almost always are.
Other plates on the grazing menu include:
- Cod and salmon croquettes
- Halloumi and courgette spring roll with sweet chilli sauce
- Lemon and parsley arancini risotto balls with sauteed wild mushrooms
- Crispy harissa chicken burger with fries
- Mussels in a white wine cream sauce served with fries
Or, if there’s two of you then you can go for double sized sharing dishes like their baked camembert with artisan bread, a whole roast chicken or beef wellington with chips or rostis. Puddings are a straightforward British affair, including sticky toffee pudding, apple and rhubarb crumble and spotted dick (quiet in the back.) They’ll also be doing a special Sunday menu with all the usuals goodies, plus some daily specials like gnocchi or sea bream.
Meanwhile, on the drinks menu, there’ll be a wide range of spirits from around the globe, which they’ll be using to make cocktails on request, from Bloody Marys to Aperol Spritz, and a short wine list with bottles starting from £19.50 and £4.10 for a glass.
