Base Face Pizza goes from lockdown delivery to Hammersmith restaurant

Summing it all up: Inspired by London's artisan producers, this new Hammersmith pizzeria is serving up pizzas, desserts and even drinks from the local area.

The low-down

All the London lockdowns were amazing for showing the ingenuity of Londoners in finding new ways to make money, particularly when their main line of business had ground to a halt. Jazz musician Tim Thornton is a good example of that - he used his time off work to go all out with a pizza obsession. He built that into a local delivery business in West London, helping to raise funds for the NHS in the process. And now he's launching his first restaurant.

Base Face Pizza uses a clever new flour blend, part 00 flour and part Tritordeum flour, which is a grain bred from Wild Barley and Durum Wheat, to create a base with a very low GI. To that Tim adds a whole load of interesting local ingredients ranging from Acton's La Latteria Burrata and Cobble Lane charcuterie to Chiswick Chillies oil.

On the launch menu you'll find, among others:

Peppergine – burnt green pepper crema, roast aubergine, olives, tomato, oregano, basil and olive oil
N’duja love me – Cobble Lane N’duja, Stichelton Blue, Parmesan, tomato, maple syrup, oregano and olive oil
Cheeky Pineapple – crispy cured pig cheek, roast pineapple & red onion jam, black pepper, mozzarella, parmesan, basil and olive oil.

For desserts, there'll be two tiramisus on the menu - classic and pistachio - and they're teaming up with Bears ice cream in Ravenscourt Park for some exclusive flavours. Drinks are courtesy of Acton wine shop Vindinista and beers are similarly local, from Barnes brewers Jeffersons Brewery.

"It’s amazing what you can do in the face of adversity" says Tim. "I cannot wait to show my customers new and old how lovely my pizzas are. I’m very proud of them!”
