A Hot Dinners exclusive
What: Baccalà
In a nutshell: Italian seafood and wine for Bermondsey
Summing it all up: Two Italian friends are behind this new seafood restaurant and wine bar on Bermonsey Street where the Italian wine selection is every bit as important as the fresh and raw fish being served up.
The low-down
Over in Bermondsey, they're getting a new neighbourhood spot in Baccalà. Billed as a seafood and wine restaurant, dishes will depend on what's fresh and in season. In the kitchen is chef Moreno Polverini who is ex-Four Seasons.
On the wine front, the selection will be exclusively Italian from small producers, but with a classic Italian selection on offer too. There'll be "a huge selection of wine by the glass" using a Coravin machine, In charge of that will be sommelier Fabio De Nicola who comes here via Hovarda and Oblix. If you're local, this will also be a handy place to buy wine during the day as they also have an off licence.
If you're just after wine and a snack, head here between 3 and 5.30pm when they'll be serving up a selection of nibbles to go with wine.
They'll be open Tuesday to Sunday, with a Sunday brunch offering planned, and will also run a raw bar on alternate days. The two-floor restaurant will feature a chef's counter on the ground floor with that raw bar and communal tables. Down in the basement, there'll be a glass floor separating the kitchen from the diners, with space for larger groups.
"Chef Moreno and Sommelier Fabio will immerse friends and family into the choice of food and wine," they say.
