• Leyton's Filly Brook pub crowdfunds its way to a new alfresco space

Having an outside space matters more than ever for hospitality businesses. Anywhere in London that can do alfresco will have a clear month's extra trading before inside dining resumes in May.

One East London pub's solution to the problem has been to seek help from its customers -

  • Central London's streets are reopening for alfresco dining in April

    westminster alfresco dining

This is very welcome news. Westminster Council have just confirmed that Londoners can expect a return to dining in the streets of Soho, Marylebone and St James this summer.

The council said that as soon as venues were allowed to open (all being well this will be on 12 April) they'll support the hospitality industry with "the return of temporary measures to enable al fresco hospitality across Westminster". They've

  • Brat at Climpson's Arch is going to be a permanent fixture

Brat extends its residency at Climpsons Arch

When London emerged from its first lockdown all those months ago, one of the first restaurants to completely reinvent itself was Tomos Parry's Brat. While the original restaurant stayed where it was (with a bit of table rejigging) they complimented it with a sister restaurant at Climpson's Arch, correctly assuming that alfresco dining would be very much a big thing in 2020.

  • Bala Baya in Southwark is bossing the winter alfresco game with its umbrella terrace

    bala baya umbrella terrace

Given the Tier 2 rules mean that all socialising is pretty much outdoors for the foreseeable, London's restaurants and bars have been busy weatherproofing their terraces and outside spaces. All of which makes it hard to stand out from the crowd, but Southwark restaurant Bala Baya seems to have succeeded.

They've just opened their Discarded Umbrella Winter Garden. It's a tie in with Discarded Spirits Co and Bala Baya’s

They've already achieved a pretty impressive makeover of nearby Grade 1 listed St Mark's and now Mercato Metropolitano have gone outside to Brown Hart Gardens, the raised garden area just in front of the Beaumont Hotel (most recently the Bonnie Gill seafood shack). Their latest opening is

  • Test Driving Ell-Fresco - Elliot's goes alfresco for the summer

Elliot's expands into Borough Market with a summer pop-up alfresco restaurant. We head down to try it out.

  • The Green Room is the South Bank's new alfresco restaurant and bar

Green room alfresco bar and restaurant opens on the South Bank

The South Bank's Green Room bar may have closed for good last year, but it's being resurrected in a different form this summer.

The Green Room #2 will be an alfresco garden space, open for the summer, serving pizza and cocktails. It's being run by hospitality group Wright & Bell which comprises Smithfield restaurant LINO, City bar Kitty Hawk and Carnaby spot Whyte & Brown. And it's a clever move,

  • Tottenham Hale club The Cause launches the Costa del Tottenham

    costa del tottenham hale

With nightclubs the businesses most affected by the Covid shutdown (and the last to come out of it), it's unsurprising that some have found other ways to make money in the meantime.

Up in Tottenham, The Cause nightclub has done a deal to double the outside space it has, and they're planning to make the most of it over the summer. The club has taken over some of the neighbouring industrial units at their site by Tottenham Hale station, and food

  • Stanley's restaurant opens in Chelsea with a huge courtyard area

New to Chelsea, Stanley's features a menu with an emphasis on British produce and has the ace-in-its-sleeve of a big outside courtyard for alfresco drinking and dining.

  • Test Driving The Garden at The Berkeley - an alfresco Mediterranean feast

The Berkeley in Knightsbridge has created a brand new alfresco restaurant at the back of the hotel. We went down for a lunchtime Med-inspired feast.

  • The Berkeley unveil The Garden restaurant - an alfresco haven in Knightsbridge

The Garden at The Berkeley in Knightsbridge

There's no doubt that restaurants with access to an outside area are going to have a better time of it than others as places reopen for business this weekend. So props to The Berkeley who not registered, 'ooh we have quite a decent outside space at the back of the hotel' but also 'why don't we do something brand new with it?'

To that end, they'll be opening an entirely new alfresco restaurant on Saturday. The Garden at The

  • Allegra in Stratford has a massive terrace which is where you want to be this summer

    allegra stratford restaurant terrace

Over in Stratford, one of the biggest selling points of the new Allegra restaurant at The Stratford was its beautiful seventh floor terrace. But the restaurant, which opened at the end of last summer, hasn't properly had a chance to showcase this space to guests yet.

Thankfully, come 10 July, that's all about to change. That's when they're opening their large terraced area and - best of all - they'll be

  • Sam's Riverside is reopening, with a seafood terrace overlooking the river

sam's riverside reopens with a seafood terrace

As London's restaurants prepare to spill outside, going alfresco in a big way this summer, new Hammersmith restaurant Sam's Riverside is taking full advantage of its waterside location.

Only open four months before the lockdown - here's a reminder of our Test Drive at the time -  the restaurant will reopen on

  • Chicama on the King's Road opens early for "terrace dining"

    chicama terrace dining

Yesterday the government announced the reopening date for London's restaurants. But it seems that some aren't waiting that long. In town last week we spotted a few restaurants doing 'takeaway' that essentially involved eating at the restaurant's tables outside. And now a restaurant on the King's Road has opened its terrace for

  • 40ft Brewery to celebrate reopening in Dalston with a 6ft beer

40ft Brewery to celebrate reopening in Dalston with a 6ft beer

While we're obviously very excited that restaurants are about to reopen, we're also just as giddy about the pubs, bars and taprooms returning across the city. And one of our favourites of the latter is definitely 40ft Brewery in Dalston. They're not only reopening their outside space, but they're also introducing a new drink to emphasise the required social distancing.

    The 6FT is
