Test Driving Mr Porter, the steakhouse meets cocktail lounge on Park Lane

Looking towards the open kitchen at Mr Porter on Park Lane

What do we need to know about Mr Porter?

This new steakhouse is the first of two big restaurant openings this year at the Hilton on Park Lane. The other is the rooftop restaurant, which gets its reveal next month. This comes from the Entourage Group who also have Mr Porters in Amsterdam, Barcelona and Ibiza. They bill it as a modern steakhouse meets cocktail lounge, and the room is pretty evenly split between the space given to the bar and the restaurant.

Where exactly is it?

You'll find it in the space that used to be Trader Vic's in the hotel's basement. If you hadn't had that pleasure, the way in is at the front of the hotel, to the left of the main entrance. Head down the spiral staircase and you'll find yourself in a restaurant that couldn't be more different in looks to the tiki bar that preceded it. Here it's all monochrome and dramatic spot lighting.

Where's a good place to meet for a drink first?

Definitely here, the bar is huge and it seemed just as popular with those having a late night drink following functions elsewhere in the hotel as it was with those dining down here. It's a fairly big cocktail list and while our mocktail didn't really thrill, our Mezcal Picante (£20) hit the spot nicely.

Where should we sit?

We liked our booth seating, but there's also a long communal dining table and then larger tables further into the room - that's useful as this is probably going to be equally popular with people here on dates as it is groups celebrating a special occasion.

So what's on the menu?

Obviously, there's steak, but they also have an extensive carpaccio section along with all the usual kind of dishes you'd expect to find on a 2025 Mayfair restaurant menu, so there's oysters, tartare and a lot of caviar on offer too.

Here's what we had to give you a flavour.

mr porter steakhouse london hilton park lane restaurant reviewSpicy yellow tail sashimi (£25) - perfectly delicious sashimi but not at all spicy.

mr porter steakhouse london hilton park lane restaurant reviewRoast beef carpaccio (£26) - our favourite of the starters, paper-thin rare roasted beef.

mr porter steakhouse london hilton park lane restaurant reviewAvocado carpaccio with Beluga caviar (£32) - maybe the spendiest avocado dish we've ever had and actually this was pretty delicious.

But before we come on to the steak, we ought to address the gender-led naming convention they've employed. There are 10 main cuts on offer, ranging from Tomakawk to A5 wagyu. But the two signature steaks are a Mrs Porter and a Mr Porter. Can you guess which is the largest? It's a pretty lame idea, which is a shame because our steak (the Mrs Porter which comes in at 750g) was one of the best cooked steaks we've had in London for a while. It came perfectly seared and seasoned and we couldn't fault it one bit.

Any sides with that?

Whatever you do, don't leave without ordering the crunchy onion loaf. You might be expecting something loaf-style but what you actually get is a mountain of crispy onions fashioned into more of a sandcastle shape. It is fabulous.

Room for dessert?

Desserts here are firmly of the more is more variety, whether that's a popcorn creme brulee with sweetcorn and jalapeno to a massive chocolate fondant.

Anything else we should know about?

Yes, you might see a door at the back of the room between the open kitchen and the bar marked Do Not Disturb. That's actually a secret speakeasy bar that's open late into the night with a DJ booth. We're told that at the moment it's only being booked for private events, but that might change.

Overall thoughts:

There are some people for whom Mr Porter will not be their kind of place at all. The music really amps up later in the evening and it's as much about getting glammed up for a big night out as it is about the food. That said, most of what we tried here really was good. Given that this is a steakhouse after all, the steak very much lived up to billing. And we liked enough of the sides and starters to make our dinner an overall thumbs-up.

If you have a freshly minted outfit or shiny new boyfriend/girlfriend you want to show off this would hit the mark very nicely.
