Roast beef and otherwordly puddings - Sunday lunch at Quo Vadis

We've done our fair share of weekend lunches recently, enjoying meals at Bob Bob Ricard, Bar Boulud and The Colony Grill. But we hadn't had a proper Sunday lunch out for a while until a trip to Quo Vadis a few weekends ago.

Sunday lunch is a relatively new thing for the Soho restaurant - they only started opening for it at the beginning of October. We went on their third Sunday and clearly word had got out as it was pretty much full. The Sunday menu features many of the usual Quo Vadis signature dishes, including their smoked eel sandwich and chicken pie. But there's the addition of a few roast dishes and - importantly - a cracking pudding menu.

We kicked things off with smoked haddock and egg kickshaws (£4) which you're going to want to order plenty of to avoid any unseemly scuffles and while the 12-year-old settled herself with Jeremy Lee's fine cheese straws, the two greedy adults went for a marbl'd pork and veal terrine £7.50) and a fine punterella salad with grilled squid served up with segments of bergamot and a garlicy, breadcrumby, anchovy dressing (£8.50).

For mains, the youngster went for a trad Moules Marinieres (£12) which she loved. Hotdinners2 had an exemplary chicken pie (£18) but the best choice was mine - Devonshire ruby beef served with roasties and pickled walnuts (£21.50) - a beautiful piece of meat, perfectly cooked, our one reservation was that we needed to order more gravy.

Chef Jeremy Lee describes his puddings as 'otherworldly' and from those we tried (all of which were £7.50) he was pretty on the money. Blackberry brulee was a nice Autumnal take on a classic, the ginger and marmelade pudding was pretty darned tasty, but our fig and almond tart was the showstopper.

Go, take your parents or kids and enjoy.

Quo Vadis is at 26-29 Dean Street, London, W1D 3LL. Find out more.

Hot Dinners were invited to Quo Vadis. Prices were correct at the time of writing.
