Test Driving Jackson Boxer at The Corner - a restaurant worth braving the Oxford Street crowds for

What do we need to know about Jackson Boxer at The Corner

As the name suggests, this is a restaurant from chef/restaurateur Jackson Boxer - the man behind Brunswick House in Vauxhall and Orasay in Notting Hill. He's taken over The Corner restaurant in Selfridges for what's being billed as a long term residency. It's open during store hours and an easy place to pop in for a light lunch or a full blown early supper.

Where exactly is it?

You'll find it through the Women's Designer Galleries on the second floor of the Oxford Street department store. It is, as you might expect, on the corner of the building where Oxford Street meets Orchard Street. The nearest tube is Bond Street.

Where's a good place to sit?

This is a lovely bright restaurant, particularly when they draw the curtains back, so most tables are decent places to sit. There are some large booth tables for groups and a series of tables for two along the window that are great for people watching (you really can spot the yellow Selfridges bags from a very long way).

But probably the best table is the one pictured below:

There's also a decent-sized bar, so if you just fancied taking a load off and recovering from all that retail therapy with a drink (and maybe a snack) you could always perch up here as both the wine and cocktail list are well worth checking out.

jackson boxer corner restaurant selfridges reviewLeft to right - Passion mezcalita made with Del Maguey Vida mezcal, passion fruit syrup, lime juice, sour chillies and a Palomita 818 with Tequila Blanco, grapefruit and vanilla cordial, yuzu and soda (both £14.95).

So what kind of food are we talking?

Jackson's come up with a very flexible menu for the shoppers here, so there's plenty to try if you just wanted to pop in for a drink and a snack, or larger items if you're planning a full three-course lunch or dinner. It's a good menu too, one where you're genuinely agonising over what to have because everything sounds so delicious.

Here's what we tried to give you a flavour:

jackson boxer corner restaurant selfridges reviewPotato cake topped with cod’s roe and chives and seasoned with kosho (£6) - not just a thing of beauty, but delicious too.

jackson boxer corner restaurant selfridges reviewIced tiger prawns with an aioli made from the prawn heads and a coriander oil to dredge those perfect prawns through. (£15)

jackson boxer corner restaurant selfridges reviewSmoked butter tagliolini, Madagascan pepper - this fabulous pasta dish can be had for just £15 if you opt for the version that comes with comte and chives. But if you've already blown the budget on a Valentino gown you might as well go for broke and have the version that's covered with N25 caviar for £50.

jackson boxer corner restaurant selfridges reviewFried chicken sandwich (£18) - a superb take on a chicken katsu sando filled with thinly shredded cabbage and a piquant caper mayo. You could sit up at the bar with this and a glass of wine and feel you were winning at life.

What's on the menu for vegetarians or vegans?

There's a separate vegan menu with three choices of snacks and larger plates. But the main menu also has plenty to offer too, including this:

jackson boxer corner restaurant selfridges reviewRoasted delica squash with cavolo nero and turmeric root (£17) - a great vegan option.

Room for dessert?

Like the rest of the offering here, the dessert menu reads extremely well. If we had more room we'd have probably also gone for the apple cake with blackberries although the slice of St James cheese with a date and tamarind chutney also sounded very enticing.

jackson boxer corner restaurant selfridges reviewIn the end we opted for this wonderful mix of Cru Virunga white and dark chocolate mousses served with a spoonful of frozen goats milk (£12).

Overall thoughts:

Selfridges shoppers are being thoroughly spoiled with the addition of this new restaurant. This was our second meal in a couple of months at a Jackson Boxer restaurant and both of them ranked among our meals of the year. Every dish was thoughtful, interesting and wonderful to eat.

London's in-store restaurants are going through one hell of a renaissance at the moment with both Harrods and Selfridges leading the pack. There's a lot of competition going on and London diners are 100% the happy beneficiaries. Come even if you aren't shopping here as the food is worth the journey alone.
